Subject: Intoduction etc.
Hello everyone. I've been listening in on the converstions for about
a week now and thought I'd introduce myself...
I am the proud owner of a 1979 Cherokee Chief with a 360 V8, TH400
trans(rebuilt before purchase), and a QT case with milemarker part
time conversion. I have had the vehicle for about six months now and
have been working on it about 80% of the time and driving it about
20%. (I hope the ratio improves :') ! During those six months I have
(deep breath) : replaced the rear diff and axles, rebuilt the Qt case
with the milemarker kit (great kit, very complete, excellent
instructions), replaced all of the U-joints, and had the engine
rebuilt ( and I rode the bus a lot!). The engine took about two
months to get rebuilt, I took it to a motorcycle racing machine shop
and the owner took his time with it. The engine has a mild
competition cam, slightly flatter pistons, and an edelbrock performer
intake and carb. I've been taking my time putting it back in the
cheif, and hope to have it road worthy this weekend... I can't wait!
I was beginning to think I have a hobby instead of a truck... I
guess it's both!
A friend of mine has a 75 Chief, and my roomate has a 72 J4000 (great
shape, for sale!) Both of these vehicles helped influence my purchase
of a Jeep, but I would have to say that the strongest influence was
the 73 AMC Hornet Sportabout wagon that I had when I was in High
School... It was the most reliable (except for the fact that the carb
had to be set to idle at 25mph for the engine to run right), durable
(survived both me and my brother pretending it was a race car and a
rally car), versital (see previous statement), and rusty (I grew up in
Michigan) car that I have ever owned. It had a host of interesting
features like an AC that had a setting marked "DESERT ONLY"
I'm learning something new every day I read the FSJ list, and hope to
be able to share some of the experience that I'm getting from my
project vehicle with you too. It's great to know that I'm not alone
in my illogical love of such a cool vehicle!
If any of you are in the denver colorado area, permenantly or just
visiting, let me know! I try, but don't succeed in getting out every
weekend for "wilderness activities" in the rockies.
BTW: I'm 26 work for an industrial software company in Boulder as an
implementation specialist, and like to browse the local salvage yard
for parts during my lunch hour... ;')

Subject: MSD or Jacobs? Shocks too.
Konnichiwa FSJ fanatics,
In my readings on a better, high voltage ignition system for me and the
old man's Jeep here, I've wondered which one is truly the best in terms
of price, and results, MSD or Jacobs ignitions? I've looked at Jacobs
systems, the Ultra Team specifically, but have heard that it doesn't
really seem to do what it advertises, and that maybe it's unreliable,
and I haven't heard much about MSD except from Joe and they're ads. So
which one is truly better?
As for shocks, when the stock ones finally go out on the GW I think two
good candidates for replacement would be Rancho RS9000s or Edelbrock
IASs, we dont' offroad much, mainly plow through deep mud and snow in
our area. So ride is really important and as it is with 30" tires it's
not really that great, rocks side to side, and jolts on some minor
bumps, annoying, but it's probably more the tires, not sure. Sounds
like the Edelbrocks would be good, self adjusting, and offer a luxury
ride on pavement, sounds good, wonder if it's true...

After checking what you suggested, I found the ID disk and do in fact have a NP229 with a 2.6:1 low ratio. Now. Is the NP229 a rugged reliable transfer case? I spent a long afternoon trying to track down the elusive "intake hose"
last fall. The catalogs at Pep Boys, Napa, AutoZone, and HiLo all
listed the incorrect size and type for my year Cherokee, and none of
them had a hose long enough to fit anyway.
For $7 or so I'd try the dealer (in fact I just may)
In November I ended up going to a shop that didn't pop the hood for
inspection.

They've been debating the first SUV deal on rec.autos 4x4 for months! I love the early Willys wagons, just ask Mark. I talk about them, a lot. They're very utilitarian. But I wouldn't label them very sporty (as in Sport Utility Vehicle). ======================================= Henry Padilla '68 Jeep Wagoneer Buick 350 thoughtfully installed by Kaiser jeepwagoneer-at-gyral.com ---------- > From: Landen Schooler (the Scotsman) <skoullar-at-ix.netcom.com> > To: Multiple recipients of <fsj-list-at-listserver.tehabi.com> > Subject: Re: Legacy of the FSJ......correction > Date: Tuesday, April 15, 1997 1:46 PM > > Pat Jorden wrote: > > > > I think the public if rather fickle in what is > > desirable. > > > > Another hot seller like the Land Cruiser is the > > somewhat older chevy pickups. It's surprisingly sturdy and hold up to 500 lbs I think. Rides very low though, and is just a shallow basket with thick diamond-screen stuff in it. I also don't like the idea of drilling even more holes in Ole Bessy's 29-yo sheetmetal. Maybe one of you engineer types can design a rack that'll hold more weight and will fit a 31 or 33 inch spare, gas can, tools, etc and rides fairly high behind the tailgate and only connects to the receiver or maybe the bumper mounts!? ======================================= Henry Padilla '68 Jeep Wagoneer Buick 350 thoughtfully installed by Kaiser jeepwagoneer-at-gyral.com ---------- > From: Mark Wallace <redgator-at-bu.edu> > To: Multiple recipients of <fsj-list-at-listserver.tehabi.com> > Subject: Rear Tire carrier/Canvas cover > Date: Tuesday, April 15, 1997 2:19 PM > > > Doh, two week backlog of digests. This is the >hose that connects the air cleaner to the front of the grill. > Carlo, The air intake hose for your GW, like my '89GW is, made of a special material that is designed to self destruct after being exposed to air for more than 15 minutes. Either that, or all previous GW owners had maniacal fits which turned them to hideous beasts with but one purpose- shredding the air intake hose on the first full moon. I have never seen one intact. You'd be better off rigging up something to work as it's just going to decompose again- fast. JB "Any man who would trade liberty for security deserves neither." Benjamin Franklin[Back to Top]

We live in CT. My wife highly supports my Wag project and maybe she can help convince you all to keep your Wag as a recreational veh (my '68 officially became the permanent 3rd car last summer). As a rec veh, you'll be able to justify more fun projects since you won't need to have the Jeep back on the road each Monday morning. Of course, mine hasn't been on the road sionce Sept but that's besides the point. Just look at it this way: maintaining/upgrading a transportation car is an ongoing expense, like an operating cost. But upgrading/enhancing a project vehicle is a capital investment in your lifestyle! ======================================= Henry Padilla '68 Jeep Wagoneer Buick 350 thoughtfully installed by Kaiser jeepwagoneer-at-gyral.com ---------- > From: Phil_Horton-at-avid.com > To: Multiple recipients of <fsj-list-at-listserver.tehabi.com> > Subject: Help save the life of an FSJ > Date: Thursday, April 17, 1997 9:45 AM > > Been happening in the spring for a couple of years now.
