Memory verses are a great way of learning God's Word.
I'm trying to help a few folks and put these links and verses together...
I started doing this over 20 years ago and it's wonderful. It's
hard to start at first, it's a battle, literally, a spiritual battle...
But I highly recommend it. :)
There are a number of very good reasons for memorizing Scripture. In
places where freedom has been lost because of government collapse or
overthrow the first thing to disappear was the Bible. Think of the attacks
placed on the Word of God by liberals who wish to silence true believers
and you'll get an idea of how quickly the Bible could be banned.
In countries like China and Russia when the communists came in the
Bibles were outlawed, prohibited and confiscated. The muslims,
buddists and hindu's aren't too fond of it either.
We will not always have our Bibles laying around us... It's best to get
them into our minds and hearts. I've heard stories of people that memorized
an entire book of the Bible and would share it with others in places where
the Bible was outlawed. The churches in Russia and China survived and grew
under such persecution. Had Pastor Wurmbrand memorized scripture before
he was imprisoned for 14 years in Communist Romania his writings would
have been of a more sound theological nature.
Memorize God's Word, hide it in your heart and mediate upon it day and night.
(Joshua 1:8, Psalm 1, Psalm 119:9 -11, Hebrews 4:12)
When you cite the passage you cite the Book, Chapter and Verse numbers,
then cite the passage and then repeat the book, chapter and verse
and also the translation. It'll help you if you are 100% faithful in
doing it that way. Knowing the reference is very important for your
own walk and faith and for sharing it with others.
An example would be like this:
John 11:35 (John eleven thirty five) Jesus wept. John 11:35 New
American Standard (or King James or NIV or... )
It may seem silly to cite the passage designator, the verse and the designator
again, but you will appreciate it later. It'll help you remember and
recall. :)
100% accuracy is the goal. Word for word. This is God's Word,
it's perfect, complete, alive and powerful. It's the sword of the Spirit.

a basis for that... ;)

Promises from God (pick a few of these... if you like it or
it speaks to you, remember it and learn it. Joshua 1:8 is one
of the first ones you might try. :)
