Yes, he was.  There are references in Paul's letter confirming such:

Colossians 4:14

Luke, the beloved physician, sends you his greetings, and also Demas.

That's why his accounts of the crucifixion are so important.  Luke's
Gospel account was set forth as an accurate account of the things
that happened.  As a doctor his training and attention to detail makes
it a valuable record.   Each Gospel has a unique characteristic or
theme that portrays Christ in a different light.  Luke's account is
referred to as "Christ the Son of Man".

Luke opens his Gospel addressing it to Theophilus:

1 Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile an account of the things 
accomplished among us,
2 just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of 
the word have handed them down to us,
3 it seemed fitting for me as well, having investigated everything 
carefully from the beginning, to write it out for you in consecutive order, 
most excellent Theophilus;
4 so that you might know the exact truth about the things you have been 
taught.

Luke also wrote the book of Acts, again referring to Theophilus:

Acts 1
1 The first account I composed, Theophilus, about all that Jesus began to 
do and teach,
2 until the day when He was taken up, after He had by the Holy Spirit given 
orders to the apostles whom He had chosen.
3 To these He also presented Himself alive, after His suffering, by many 
convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days, and 
speaking of the things concerning the kingdom of God.
