The following is what I recommend for filesystem sizes on
an HP 9000/800 series.
The two filesystems that are critical are the / and the /var.
The 4 gig setup is what I used for a D360.
The 9G setup is what I will use for a K460.
Installation of HP-UX 11i filesystems is
approximately as follows for a 9G and 4G drive:
9G 4G
filesystem default setup
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
/stand 112 160M 160M - kernel configs lives here
pri swap* 1024 1024M 1024M - filesystem swap may be added later
/ 140 1024M 512M - root filesystem - CRITICAL
/tmp 64 512M 512M - can be made smaller
/home 20 REMOVE - not used, link /home to user "raid"
/opt 976 2048M 1650M - may be smaller, depending on apps
/usr 1456 1840M 1600M - static filesystem
/var 300 2048M 1000M - CRITICAL filesystem, logs!
---------------------------------------------------------------
* -swap should be ~ 1x memory, if RAM is limited, increase swap
---------------------------------------------------------------
appx leftover free space: 344M (4gig) 1,824M (9gig)
remember YMMV :)
If you need to adjust for space you can reduce root down to 256M
safely, I wouldn't go less than that though, you can bring /tmp
down to the recommened, /opt down to 1024 or the recommended if you're
not installing any apps there, /usr can stay at the recommended. But I
suggest making a larger /var as it is also used by apps for /var/tmp and
holds your log files. If someone wants to take over your system they
often try to fill up the / or /var filesystems. Watch those two systems.
I also recommend moving the root user account into a subdirectory on
the / filesystem. Don't move it to a different filesystem though as
you may not be able to login if the system crashes. Use /sbin/sh for
root's shell. Using a shell from a different filesystem could prevent
access.
hope this helps,
john
