patches? we don't need no steekin' patches...

One of the most frustrating things as a System Admin managing
an HP system is to call in to have a problem resolved and the
first thing out of the System Engineer's mouth is, "Do you have
the latest patch?".

I'm convinced that it the system had smoke rolling out the vents
they'd ask that question.  

What is it with HP and patches?  

The best that most of us can guess is that since it's so hard to develop
s/w on a HP that even HP can't get it right the first time. :)  I've had
two or three patch sets that I've had to back out because they were bad,
or required a patch to fix the patch.

Don't get me wrong, I like HP-UX.  But I hate patches, well, almost
as much as a microsoft operating system...

   PROBLEM:  need to install OpenGL patches on Series 700 - ACE installs
  
  Discovered two patches required for my HP 9000 Series 700 workstations using
  the HP-UX 10.20 ACE installs.  
  
  
   PHSS_19257  - requires a reboot (3D Runtime patch for ACE installs)
   PHSS_19263  - no reboot required, depends on 19257 patch (OpenGL for ACE) 
  
  
  That means I'll need to load the first one, reboot, then load the second one...  
  Considering I have about 14 workstations that need this patch I could:
  
  	a) log into each workstation and install the patch via SAM or swinstall,
  		or
  	b) write a script to use swinstall and loop through my systems.
  
  The problem with either approach is that I need to coordinate with the users
  as they don't like being rebooted while they're working on the system...  Tends
  to make them call me and ask what I'm doing... :-)   It also causes them to lose
  the files they were working on...  that's not a good thing since the company is 
  paying them to make progress and save their work.  That means I must run this 
  script after hours or only run the non-reboot script and manually load the reboot script.
  
  
  Because there is also the issue of migrating the NIS domain and migrating their
  workstation to a new subnet, I'll run a script to change domains, then manually migrate
  their workstations to the new subnet, and patch at the same time.  Then after the
  14 workstations have been migrated to the new subnet and patched, I'll run the automated
  script for the OpenGL.
  
   patching the machines from a central location (OpenGL, non-reboot patch)
  The instructions (see below) provided use the following command:
  
                  swinstall -x autoreboot=true -x match_target=true \
                          -s /tmp/PHSS_19263.depot
  
  The details of this patch indicate that it is for ACE installed systems only.
  To facilitate this process I'm using remsh and a loop after doing the reboot patch
  manually:
  
  (the script is not optimized, I should use variables
  within the script instead of defining the full paths...)

  THIS CONFIRMED THAT the script would work.  If the patch had been installed previously,
  it would jump out of the loop and go to the next system.

      note: date command inserted will create a file called:  log.99Dec21.OpenGLpatch
   normal Berkley r command file stuff, not recommended if a good firewall isn't in place.

  Installation Instructions:
          Please review all instructions and the Hewlett-Packard
          SupportLine User Guide or your Hewlett-Packard support terms
          and conditions for precautions, scope of license,
          restrictions, and, limitation of liability and warranties,
          before installing this patch.

          1. Back up your system before installing a patch.
          2. Login as root.
          3. Copy the patch to the /tmp directory.
          4. Move to the /tmp directory and unshar the patch:
                  cd /tmp
                  sh PHSS_19263
          5a. For a standalone system, run swinstall to install the patch:
  
                  swinstall -x autoreboot=true -x match_target=true \
                          -s /tmp/PHSS_19263.depot
  
          By default swinstall will archive the original software in
          /var/adm/sw/patch/PHSS_19263.  If you do not wish to retain a
          copy of the original software, you can create an empty file
          named /var/adm/sw/patch/PATCH_NOSAVE.
  
          WARNING: If this file exists when a patch is installed, the
                   patch cannot be deinstalled.  Please be careful
                   when using this feature.
  
          It is recommended that you move the PHSS_19263.text file to
          /var/adm/sw/patch for future reference.
  
          To put this patch on a magnetic tape and install from the
          tape drive, use the command:
  
                  dd if=/tmp/PHSS_19263.depot of=/dev/rmt/0m bs=2k

  Patches are usually on the support plus CD's.
  But they may also be found on hp's ftp server, one
  IP address that has worked was 192.151.52.14  - log
  in as anonymous, with your email address.  Then use
  dir to view directory.  hp-ux_patches is usually the place to head.
