Finally got around to setting up Samba on an HP-UX 11i install.
On HP-UX 11i, samba comes installed but not configured. I'm not sure
of the version, but even the open source and older versions seem similar.
See http://samba.org/
Solaris, Linux and HP-UX all seem to setup the same. The files below may
be slightly different between versions.
------------------------------------
The files (on HP-UX 11i) are located at:
/opt/samba
/var/opt/samba
/etc/opt/samba
------------------------------------
To activate samba automatically, you must set samba to 1 in:
/etc/rc.config.d/samba
(HP-UX specific - be careful in this directory!)
-------------------------------------
With the help of an admin in from another site
we leveraged his experience with Samba from older versions
to get it setup. He immediately went for "swat".
Amazing tool. We did the configuration in around 15 minutes!
The following notes would allow you to edit the smb.conf
file directly. I found that only the /etc/opt/samba/smb.conf
file was modified via "swat".
-------------------------------------------------
In order for swat to work, one must check for
the "swat 901" entries in the following files:
/etc/inetd.conf
/etc/services
(both were in the HP-UX 11i files and uncommented, no changes required)
------------------------------------
TO CONFIGURE using swat, (command found in: /opt/samba/swat )
fire up Netscape:
address: servername:901
(servername is the hostname of the sambaserver)
Globals - swat:
workgroup - (the name of the NT domain or workgroup used by the PCs)
netbios name - (leave blank, defaults to hostname, or specify a generic
name...)
server string - (engineering UNIX fileserver)
share mode = security = user
encrypt = no (avoids the problem /var/opt/samba/private/smbpassword)
smbnull - guest account (an entry exists by default in /etc/passwd on HP-UX
11i)
preserve case = no
WINS = (IP address of the wins server)
commit changes via the web page
------------------------------------
from PC side:
IF you use plaintext passwords you will require a registry "tweak" to
make it work. If you setup /var/opt/samba/private/smbpassword then you
won't need to make this registry change on the PC side. If security
is an issue, go the extra step to use encrypted passwords.
download the required file from /opt/samba/docs/...:
Win98_PlainPassword.reg
Win2000_PlainPassword.reg
Win95_PlainPassword.reg
NT4_PlainPassword.reg
------------------------------------
SWAT created the smb.conf file automatically from the webpage:
/etc/opt/samba/smb.conf :
# Samba config file created using SWAT
# from a client workstation (ip address)
