When setting things up I always try to do a few things
as part of a strategic plan.
1) use one centralized configuration file shared by all users
2) keep things modular and unique to permit upgrades and older versions
3) use "standard" tools from HP, Linux or Sun
4) avoid downloading tools from other sites
5) avoid compiling tools from other sites
6) keep the documentation for all systems on one web site (internal)
7) document each step along the way so it's repeatable
8) put the documentation in a script form or a how-to
9) provide mobility and flexibility for the users
10) minimize local variations of users or workstations
11) operate under the KISS method. ;)
Thin clients, centralized repository for all config files...
