Fri Oct 14 2005 SAMPLE Sys Admin Job Description As a Sr. Infrastructure administrator, this person is responsible for the daily administration of our Unix based servers running Solaris and Linux. This includes general system administration tasks, software and hardware support, system configuration, backups, system monitoring, performance tuning and troubleshooting. This person must have a development background, with excellent customer relation skills and some project management skills. Candidate should be able to work with application developers, helping trouble-shoot their applications and guide them with best practices. Candidate must be able to express his/her thoughs clearly and capable of working in a team or as a sole contributer. Idividual should be self-motivated with very good communication skills. Key Job Responsibilities: - System Administration - This person would be responsible for the day-to-day administration of our Unix based servers. This includes monitoring the trouble ticket queue, system trouble-shooting, hardware and software system changes, shell scripting, system performance monitoring, system sizing, system integration, upgrade implementation, and hardware diagnostics. - Application support - This person would work with application developers to help trouble-shoot and fine-tune applications and also if required guide application developers in best practices related to using the underlying UNIX infrastructure. - Performance Tuning - Person will be involved with performance tuning the systems to achieve optimal performance for computational intensive applications - Design & Architecture - Suggest and improve systems design and architecture for both systems and applications. - Communication - There will also be some client contact, and some project management skills required. - Documentation - Documentation for all the above - Company standards - Follow all the company prescribed global standards and procedures like security, access control, support and change control. Skills and Requirements: - Must have 5+ years of hands-on Linux (Redhat), Solaris administration experience in a medium to large company, with good knowledge of UNIX internals - Must have had some application development background preferably ?java? - Must have experience with SUN enterprise hardware and storage . (Operational experience and hands on disassembly and assembly of the above) - Basic knowledge of networking, TCP, UDP, RPC etc. Extensive NIS and NFS knowledge and NFS troubleshooting is a must. - Shell and/or Perl scripting knowledge and skills are required (other programming background helpful ) - Sun Jumpstart with pre-script and post-script experience and clear concepts are important - Volume management software software experience (VxVM, VxFS, ODS) is a must. ( Veritas Cluster and Cluster File System is a plus ) - Web server (Apache), Samba, Mail and DNS is required - Position requires candidate to travel to remote site near Sacramento for weekly/bi-weekly or weekend work to system mantainance and requires to carry a pager 24/7 when on call and requires mantainance/installation work to be performed outside of business hours. - Knowledge of SAN and NAS technologies and be able to support the above is a plus - Backup hardware and software technologies and hand-on experience is a plus (Netbackup , BackupExec or Alexandria) - Knowledge of basic NT Technology - College or Graduate Degree is preferable.
