I was in a hurry and didn't have time to look them over. I think they were all mid-80's (sorry, I don't know how to tell an XJ Wagoneer from an SJ Wagoneer). Vehicles usually stay in the yard for about 6 to 8 weeks before they're removed, and I don't know how long these Wagoneers have been there. Anyway, if you're not too far away, it's $1 to get in, and you bring your own tools and pull your own parts. And if you're lucky, no one else took the part you need! - - -doug ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Sep 2004 17:56:36 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: xj: what a mess... We were up in Mt. I guess there is no barrier in the median through there, folks were pulling u-turns in the backup... This place on I-5 is right where the southbound lanes go into 4 lanes and the speed limit jumps from 60 to 70. Sometimes folks don't sort out real well here and you get folks holding things up... My guess is the guy in the vette went around the bottleneck and then cut back over and lost it... maybe more details will come out... for it to fly out of that median they had to be really moving... We watched them working on the folks in the minivan... then saw the chopper come in. The minivan didn't look that bad, but the driver's side of it was damaged. The trooper was off in the ditch with the hood up and the vette a bit further north of it. The State Patrol says a speeding Corvette going southbound crossed the median, went airborne, and smashed into an Isuzu Trooper and a minivan going northbound. "When (the Corvette) came out of the median, it was pointed nose-down into the pavement and the back end was straight up," said State Patrol spokesman Lance Ramsey. Two people in the Corvette were killed. The minivan carried a family of four -- two parents and two kids -- and the father was being airlifted to Harborview with critical injuries. The three others in the minivan had minor injuries as did the two people inside the Trooper. The crash blocked two of the three northbound lanes in the area for several hours before being cleared around 5 p.m. The traffic backup stretched for 3-4 miles in both directions. State troopers were running speed traps through the area during that time and the Corvette was one that got away from them. ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://wagoneers.com ** ** http://freegift.net ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Sep 2004 18:35:00 -0700 From: "Jim Blair" Subject: xj: Re: what a mess... Long time no see. The ZJs started getting their act together by '97, even though they still have bloat trouble. (too much foo foo stuff) The calipers and rotors often have issues (and there is a factory recall on some) and the looseness of the steering may be the wheelbearings going south (they were too light duty for such a barge. It's like running a Grand Wagoneer on Honda wheelbearings!) From: Jeremiah Westpfahl Subject: xj: Re: Fleet Change John: What actually are the number of reasons to avoid the ZJ? The best way to go would be to get the high pinion dana30 that doesnt have the vacum actuated axle engagement. The high pinion version also has 297 u-joints which are what the standard dana44 runs. Also the gears in the high pinion are supposed to be 30% stronger, not to metion you gain 4" of ground clearance for you drive shaft. Any xj with the np242 will have the highpinion front and if I can remeber right 96 and up also have them. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-xj-at-digest.net [mailto:owner-xj-at-digest.net]On Behalf Of john Sent: Monday, September 06, 2004 10:02 PM To: xj-list Subject: xj: dana 30 question my son wants to know if a Dana 30 can handle a locker and 31's? if not, what is needed to build it up? thanx, john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://wagoneers.com ** ** http://freegift.net ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Sep 2004 08:55:25 -0500 From: "Okiebinder" Subject: xj: RE: what a mess... John, Last summer I was driving south on I-35 just out side Norman, OK., and the car in front of me, about 5 car lengths, lost control and crossed the median. He had just passed me and was only going a couple of mph faster than I was (65-70mph). It looked like he was going to hit the outside guard rail then over corrected and then went straight into the median. The median had a pretty deep dip in the middle and when he came out the other side he went flying into the air. He did a complete flip with a half twist, about 15-20 ft in the air. Landed wheels down facing the road. He somehow went between or over the on coming traffic. It was incredible!!! While he was in the air the hatch back flew open and dumped out all sorts of stuff. (ice chest, books, backpack etc.) I had three guys in my Scout with me. We stopped and got across the hiway to check on him. By the time we got across the road there was all ready a Police officer pulling up. He was okay but a little in shock I think. He quickly got out of the car and started walking around looking at the damage. The landing broke all the passenger side glass and rear hatch. Anyway a little OT, but it is amazing what a car will do, when out of control. At least no one was injured or killed in the accident that I witnessed. Also like the XJ and the J10... :) She wanted a V8 too, until we took several of each and did a little time trial... :) The difference between the V8 and the 4.0L isn't that significant, roughly 8 to 10% less power... still need to take the 300d to that section of road and see how fast it'll go... :) So far in doing our normal wandering around in the area we're seeing 19 to 20mpg with the 4.0L WJ where with the 4.7L WJ we were only seeing 14 to 16. The XJ with the 4.0L would give us 16 - 17 doing the same thing... so this WJ is really a surprise. :) Of course when I asked my wife which vehicle we'll normally take for running around and she said my benz... at 30+ mpg in town it's the winner for economy. :) john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://wagoneers.com ** ** http://freegift.net ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ End of xj-digest V1 #1896 *************************
